YouTube removes the shared-Wi-Fi requirement from more TV connections

YouTube is overhauling the way its mobile app connects to televisions, reducing dependence on the phone and TV being connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The change makes it easier to link a handset to a television session and control playback even when traditional Cast discovery is unavailable. Mobile-to-TV interaction has been part of YouTube for more than a decade, but the underlying assumptions of home networking have changed considerably.

Users may be on guest networks, cellular data or isolated Wi-Fi segments while still wanting to control a nearby screen. Reducing network requirements makes the experience more resilient. The update also reflects Google's broader effort to treat the phone as a universal controller for large-screen entertainment. YouTube already uses mobile devices for search, queue management and account interaction because typing on a touchscreen is usually faster than using a television remote.

Smoother pairing strengthens that relationship and may ultimately make the smartphone an even more central part of the connected-TV ecosystem.
