Google Assistant prepares to disappear from Android phones starting tomorrow

Google is preparing to begin the long-awaited removal of Google Assistant from Android phones and tablets on September 4, with Gemini becoming the default successor across supported devices. The transition marks the end of an era for one of Android's most recognizable services. Google Assistant became central to voice commands, smart-home control, Android Auto and wearable interactions, but generative AI has fundamentally changed Google's expectations for what an assistant should do.

Gemini can handle more conversational requests and increasingly interact with personal context, applications and visual information. The migration will occur progressively rather than switching every device off simultaneously, while some categories such as certain Google Home and Google TV products will continue using Assistant for now. The biggest challenge is reliability.
