Android Motion Assist targets motion sickness during car journeys

Google's new Motion Assist feature is expanding through the September Android Drop, bringing system-level visual cues designed to reduce discomfort when users look at a smartphone while travelling in a vehicle. The technology displays animated indicators around the edge of the screen that move in response to vehicle motion. The idea is to reduce the sensory conflict between what a person's eyes see on a stationary display and what the inner ear feels as the car accelerates, brakes or turns.

Apple has introduced a similar approach on iPhone, making vehicle-motion cues a rare example of competing ecosystems converging quickly on a practical accessibility feature. Motion Assist is particularly relevant because smartphones have become entertainment, reading and work devices during commutes. Google is extending the capability beyond Pixel hardware to compatible Android 17 devices from other manufacturers.

It is not intended as a medical treatment, but for users prone to motion sickness, a relatively modest interface change could make long journeys substantially more comfortable.
