Xiaomi's upcoming 18 Fold is becoming strategically important before it has even launched because Chinese memory manufacturer CXMT will supply LPDDR6 DRAM for the device. Xiaomi has also confirmed that the foldable will use its latest in-house 3-nanometre Xring O3 processor, creating a flagship built around considerably more domestically developed semiconductor technology than previous generations.

LPDDR6 offers higher bandwidth and improved efficiency, both increasingly important as smartphones run larger AI models, high-resolution cameras and complex multitasking workloads. The partnership is significant for China's semiconductor industry because advanced mobile memory has traditionally been dominated by companies including Samsung and SK Hynix. CXMT moving into a major Xiaomi flagship shows that domestic suppliers are beginning to challenge that structure.

For consumers, the origin of the memory may be less obvious than the resulting speed or battery efficiency, but the strategic implications are substantial. The 18 Fold is expected to launch during September and could become an important showcase for Xiaomi's growing control over its own technology stack.
