Motorola has formally launched the Moto Watch Ultra, one of its most ambitious smartwatches in years and a serious attempt to compete with Google, Samsung and Garmin-style fitness devices. The watch uses a 1.5-inch POLED display rated at up to 2,700 nits, Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 hardware and Wear OS 6. Motorola has partnered with Polar for advanced fitness and recovery algorithms, while LTE connectivity lets owners make calls, stream music and receive notifications without keeping a phone nearby.
Other specifications include dual-frequency GPS, 5ATM water resistance and a 550mAh battery. Motorola says a short charge can provide roughly a day's usage, an important feature in a category where battery anxiety remains common. The partnership with Polar may be the most strategically interesting element because established fitness companies possess years of physiological data and algorithm development that general electronics brands cannot easily reproduce.
Motorola's return to premium Wear OS hardware gives Android users another credible alternative and increases pressure on Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch to differentiate beyond basic smartwatch functions.
