TCL P80 Ultra combines OLED with NxtPaper display technology

TCL has used IFA 2026 to introduce the P80 Ultra, a smartphone that combines an OLED panel with the company's NxtPaper display technology. NxtPaper has traditionally focused on reducing glare and creating a more paper-like viewing experience, while OLED is prized for contrast, response time and deep blacks.

Combining the two aims to deliver the visual richness consumers expect from a modern premium screen while retaining eye-comfort characteristics that differentiate TCL from dozens of otherwise similar Android devices. The P80 Ultra starts around €549, positioning it in the competitive upper-midrange rather than flagship territory. Display technology is a sensible area for TCL to emphasize because the company has extensive experience manufacturing televisions and panels.

Smartphone brands increasingly struggle to differentiate through processors alone, particularly when several competitors use the same Qualcomm or MediaTek platforms. A genuinely distinctive screen can be easier for a buyer to notice immediately in a store. The challenge is proving that NxtPaper's benefits remain meaningful when layered onto OLED without sacrificing brightness, colour accuracy or battery efficiency.
