Google Assistant retirement begins as Gemini becomes Android's default assistant

Google has begun removing Google Assistant access from Android phones and paired devices, with Gemini taking over as the primary mobile assistant. Google announced that the transition would start September 3 and continue over several weeks rather than switching every user simultaneously. Once the change reaches a device, users will no longer be able to switch back to the old Assistant. The migration also affects paired Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and Android Auto experiences projected from phones.

Google Home and Nest speakers are not part of this particular shutdown. The change closes one of the longest chapters in Android history. Google Assistant became synonymous with voice commands, smart-home control and hands-free phone operation, but generative AI has changed expectations dramatically. Gemini can interpret broader requests, work across applications and hold more natural conversations. The difficult part is ensuring simple commands remain just as dependable.

Users may tolerate an imperfect answer to a complex question, but they expect timers, calls, navigation and music controls to work instantly. Google's success depends on merging Gemini's intelligence with Assistant's predictability.
