Samsung begins final transition away from Samsung Messages

Samsung is accelerating the retirement of its own Messages application as Google Messages becomes the standard messaging experience across more Galaxy devices. The transition has been developing for several product generations, but 2026 increasingly marks the point where Samsung's separate messaging client stops being strategically necessary.

Google Messages provides the RCS infrastructure that Android needs to compete more effectively with Apple's messaging ecosystem and allows Samsung to avoid duplicating development work for increasingly complex features. Google is simultaneously adding richer functions such as shared Keep notes and conversation themes, making consolidation even more logical. Existing Samsung Messages users may continue seeing the application on some devices or regions during the transition, but the direction is clear.

For the Android ecosystem, standardising around one major RCS client reduces fragmentation and gives developers, carriers and users a more predictable experience. Samsung loses a small piece of interface ownership, yet gains access to Google's faster messaging feature development without needing to maintain a parallel platform.
