IFA's opening day highlights a broader shift across the mobile industry: the smartphone is increasingly becoming the control centre rather than the entire product experience. Xiaomi is presenting hundreds of devices spanning phones, vehicles and the home; Samsung is tying Galaxy AI to televisions and appliances; Huawei continues linking watches, earbuds and tablets; and Motorola is combining its phones with a renewed Wear OS strategy.
At the same time, Google is embedding Gemini across Android, Messages, Gmail, Docs, Keep, wearables and Android Auto. The competitive question is therefore changing. Consumers once compared phones primarily through processors, megapixels and display resolution. Those specifications still matter, but several manufacturers now use similar components and deliver more performance than ordinary applications require. Ecosystem convenience becomes the harder thing to copy.
A watch that unlocks a laptop, earbuds that hand audio between devices or an assistant that remembers context across applications can create stronger loyalty than another benchmark improvement. September 2026 is making that transition unusually visible as hardware launches and operating-system updates arrive almost simultaneously.
