Google's September Android Drop makes Gemini remember where objects are stored

Google's September Android Drop is introducing a practical new relationship between Gemini and Find Hub. Users can tell Gemini where they have placed an ordinary object—even one without a Bluetooth tracker—and optionally attach a photograph. The information can later be retrieved through Gemini or through a remembered-items section inside Find Hub. A passport placed in a drawer is the obvious example: the phone is not actively tracking its position but is remembering the location on the user's behalf.

The feature is expected on supported devices running Android 16 or newer in eligible markets. It is a useful example of AI becoming part of operating-system memory rather than remaining a chatbot. Many supposedly lost objects are not physically missing; their owner simply cannot remember where they were deliberately stored. That makes the feature potentially valuable without requiring additional hardware.

Privacy will matter, however, because information about where people keep keys, documents and valuables can be sensitive. Google's implementation needs to make retention and deletion controls straightforward.
