Garena Free City pushes GTA-style mobile worlds into more markets

Garena's Free City continues expanding beyond its original Argentine Android test, with downloads now registering in the Philippines and other smaller territories. The Free Fire publisher is attempting to build a full urban crime sandbox specifically for smartphones, combining city exploration, driving, shooting and mission-based progression. This is a considerably harder engineering problem than impressive promotional footage makes it appear.

A convincing open world must continuously stream environments, vehicles, pedestrians and missions while operating across an enormous range of Android hardware. Garena has a major advantage in that it already understands how to optimise large-scale online games for Southeast Asia and Latin America, where lower-priced devices coexist with premium phones.

Free City is also arriving as several publishers attempt to occupy the same mobile territory, making GTA-style action one of the emerging competitive categories of 2026. The expanding soft launch will reveal whether Garena can produce not just a technically functioning city, but one interesting enough to keep players returning once the novelty wears off.
