Android Motion Assist brings vehicle-motion cues to more phones

Google's September Android Drop formalises Motion Assist, a system designed to reduce motion sickness while using a smartphone in a moving vehicle. The feature overlays animated visual cues around the display that respond to acceleration, braking and directional changes. The idea is to reduce the mismatch between what a passenger's eyes perceive while looking at a relatively stationary screen and what the inner ear senses as the vehicle moves.

Similar technology has already appeared elsewhere, and Android's adoption suggests vehicle-motion cues are becoming a standard accessibility feature rather than a niche experiment. Motion Assist is associated with Android 17 and is expected to reach compatible devices beyond Google's Pixel line. Smartphones are now used for reading, gaming, messaging and work throughout commutes, making car sickness a more relevant usability problem than when phones were only checked briefly.

The feature will not eliminate symptoms for everyone, but system-level support makes it far easier to try without installing specialist software.
