IFA 2026 makes the connected ecosystem more important than the smartphone alone

The clearest mobile-hardware theme from IFA 2026 is that companies increasingly expect consumers to buy into connected ecosystems rather than evaluate smartphones in isolation.

Xiaomi is linking phones, tablets, appliances and vehicles; Motorola is rebuilding a Wear OS and Qi2 accessory portfolio; Samsung is connecting Galaxy devices with televisions and the smart home; Huawei continues expanding tablets and wearables; and Google is embedding Gemini into Android services rather than treating it as a separate chatbot. This changes the basis of competition. Processors, camera sensors and display specifications remain important, but rivals can often match them within a generation.

Seamless continuity between devices is much more difficult to reproduce. A phone that remembers where belongings are stored, hands navigation to a watch, powers a shared accessory ecosystem and coordinates with home devices creates switching costs that raw specifications cannot. IFA 2026 therefore feels less like a phone show than a preview of what happens after the smartphone stops being the only screen that matters.
