Garena continues expanding Free City, its ambitious open-world crime game designed specifically for mobile devices. Initially tested on Android in Argentina, the project has since appeared in additional markets including the Philippines. Free City combines city exploration, vehicle driving, shooting and mission-based progression in a format clearly intended to occupy territory traditionally associated with console and PC open-world games. The technical challenge is substantial.
A large urban environment must continuously stream traffic, pedestrians, missions and scenery while remaining stable across a huge range of Android processors, memory configurations and storage capacities. Garena's experience operating Free Fire in Southeast Asia and Latin America gives it unusually deep knowledge of lower-cost devices and inconsistent network conditions. The bigger question is content density.
Open worlds impress initially through scale, but players only stay if there are meaningful activities and systems filling that space. Free City is therefore an important test not just for Garena but for the broader mobile market. Several publishers are now experimenting with GTA-style urban sandboxes, suggesting the genre may be entering a new competitive phase on smartphones.
