Apple's September 9 keynote is also expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max alongside the company's first foldable model. Pre-event reporting points toward improved thermal management, greater battery efficiency and significant camera changes, potentially including a mechanical aperture system that would give photographers more direct control over depth of field and light intake. The devices are also expected to use Apple's next-generation A20 Pro processor and updated modem technology.
The strategic context is almost as interesting as the hardware. Apple's traditional iPhone upgrade cycle has become increasingly difficult to sustain because recent models already deliver more than enough performance for most consumers. Foldables, AI features and more ambitious camera systems provide the company with opportunities to create visible reasons to upgrade again. At the same time, higher component costs and premium positioning could push prices upward.
With Google already shipping the Pixel 11 family and Samsung maintaining a mature foldable lineup, Apple's September launch is no longer occurring in a vacuum. The company needs its ecosystem advantages to feel as compelling as the hardware itself.
