Android Motion Assist targets motion sickness during car journeys

Google's September Android Drop also introduces Motion Assist, a system designed to reduce motion sickness while passengers use their phones inside moving vehicles. The feature overlays animated visual cues around the display that respond to acceleration, braking and directional changes. The underlying idea is to reduce the conflict between what a person's eyes perceive while looking at a mostly stationary screen and what the inner ear senses as the vehicle moves.

Similar concepts have appeared elsewhere, but system-level Android support could make the technology available to a much wider audience. Motion Assist is tied to Android 17, separating it from some of the September Drop features that work on older versions. Smartphones are increasingly used for reading, gaming and work throughout commutes, making motion sickness a genuine usability problem rather than a niche inconvenience.

The feature will not eliminate symptoms for everyone, but it provides an easy option users can activate without downloading specialist software or attaching additional hardware.
