Xiaomi has officially launched the 18 Fold in China, escalating competition in the premium folding-phone market immediately before Apple's September event. The device uses Xiaomi's internally developed XRing O3 AI processor and a wide 'medium-fold' format designed to support multitasking across the large interior display. Pricing starts around 10,999 yuan and rises to roughly 14,999 yuan depending on configuration.
Xiaomi is also using locally supplied DRAM from CXMT, giving the product strategic importance inside China's effort to build a more self-reliant semiconductor supply chain. Foldables remain expensive, but the category is becoming increasingly competitive as Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi refine their designs. Xiaomi says the 18 Fold is lighter than Apple's current Pro Max handset despite providing a much larger unfolded workspace.
The larger question is whether consumers beyond enthusiasts are ready to accept foldable pricing and durability trade-offs in exchange for tablet-like multitasking. Apple's expected entry into folding devices increases the pressure on every existing manufacturer to establish its position now.
