Huawei Mate XT2 takes the tri-fold smartphone into a second generation

Huawei has launched the Mate XT2 series, advancing its unusual tri-fold smartphone design while competition at the top of China's premium market intensifies. The new model introduces an updated folding mechanism, enhanced water resistance, privacy-focused display technology and Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro processor. Prices range from approximately 19,999 to 24,999 yuan, placing the XT2 firmly in ultra-premium territory, with Chinese sales beginning September 12.

Huawei is effectively treating the tri-fold as a new device category positioned somewhere between a conventional smartphone and a tablet. The engineering challenge is substantial: two hinges introduce additional mechanical complexity, thickness and durability concerns while the expanded display requires considerably more power. Huawei nevertheless holds a commanding position in China's foldable market, giving it enough scale to continue experimenting.

The Mate XT2 also demonstrates how aggressively Chinese manufacturers are moving in premium hardware even as Apple prepares its September launch. Foldables are no longer simply Samsung's experiment; they have become one of the smartphone industry's main design battlegrounds.
