TCL's P80 Ultra and P80 Pro remain among the most distinctive smartphone launches from IFA because they bring the company's NXTPAPER technology to OLED displays. NXTPAPER has traditionally focused on reducing reflections and eye strain through specialised screen treatments, while OLED provides deep contrast, fast response and premium colour reproduction. Combining the two potentially removes the compromise between comfortable reading and flagship-quality visuals.
The P80 Ultra uses a large high-refresh display and includes a dedicated Max Ink mode that can simplify the interface into a monochrome, e-reader-like presentation. That is particularly relevant as smartphones increasingly replace dedicated reading devices. Modern flagship displays already compete within narrow specification margins, making subjective improvements such as glare reduction potentially more meaningful than another small resolution increase.
TCL's challenge is preserving peak brightness and colour accuracy while applying its eye-comfort layers. If successful, NXTPAPER OLED could give TCL a genuinely recognizable display identity in a market otherwise dominated by very similar glass rectangles.
