Pixel Watch 5 gets its first update with Gemini and gesture improvements

Google's Pixel Watch 5 has received its first post-launch software update, combining September security patches with further Gemini integration, gesture improvements and GPS-related refinements. First updates are often important for wearables because reviews and early adopters expose issues that are difficult to identify during controlled testing.

Google's strategy for Pixel Watch increasingly mirrors its Pixel phone approach: hardware is only one part of the product, while AI services and ongoing software changes provide much of the differentiation. Gemini on the wrist can potentially make quick queries and contextual assistance more convenient than reaching for a phone, although voice interactions need to remain fast enough that users do not simply revert to the larger device.

Battery consumption is another concern whenever richer AI functionality reaches small wearables. The September update provides an early indication that Google intends to iterate aggressively on the Watch 5 rather than treating its launch software as fixed.
