IFA 2026 closes with the smartphone becoming only one piece of the mobile ecosystem

As IFA 2026 concludes in Berlin, the show's clearest mobile theme is that the smartphone increasingly functions as one node inside a much broader personal computing system. Xiaomi is building its own processors and linking phones with tablets, vehicles and home devices. Motorola is combining smartphones, Wear OS, Qi2 and Qira AI. Google is replacing Assistant with Gemini across phones, watches and vehicles.

Smart rings are adding payments and haptic feedback, while AI earbuds are attempting to become persistent memory and productivity tools. Even mobile gaming hardware is changing through Arm's neural-rendering technology, which uses AI to generate graphics more efficiently. None of these developments eliminates the smartphone. Instead, they make it more central as the authentication, communication and connectivity hub tying everything else together. The competitive question is shifting from 'who has the best phone?'

toward 'which collection of devices works together with the least friction?' That ecosystem battle is likely to define the next phase of mobile technology.
