Pokémon Champions opens more local tournaments to mobile players

Pokémon Champions is also becoming more relevant as a serious mobile esports platform. Alongside the new September competitive season, organisers are allowing the mobile edition to be used in additional local events including Open Play Sessions, VGC Cups, Challenges and selected Celebration Events.

Higher-level regional competitions still require Nintendo hardware, but allowing phones into more official environments lowers the barrier for players who want to participate without buying a Switch specifically for competitive Pokémon. The change is significant because smartphones already provide enormous global reach, particularly in markets where dedicated consoles remain expensive.

Tournament organisers must still deal with practical differences in device performance, notifications and network reliability, but mobile eligibility makes Pokémon competition considerably more accessible. Updated disconnect rules also give tournament staff greater discretion to replay, void or award games after prolonged disconnections.

Pokémon Champions launched as a dedicated competitive platform, and its growing mobile role suggests The Pokémon Company increasingly sees phones as legitimate tournament hardware rather than merely a secondary way to practice.
