HarmonyOS 7 becomes central to Huawei's large-screen mobile strategy

Huawei's Mate XT2 also provides one of the clearest demonstrations yet of HarmonyOS 7's large-screen ambitions. A tri-fold phone is only useful if software can intelligently reorganise itself as the device moves between conventional smartphone proportions and a 10.2-inch tablet canvas. Huawei is therefore using HarmonyOS to coordinate multitasking, application layouts and cross-device services rather than treating the expanded screen as simply a larger phone display.

The approach mirrors a broader mobile-industry transition. Foldable hardware has matured considerably, but software adaptation increasingly determines whether the extra screen space actually improves productivity. Huawei's advantage in China is its ability to coordinate operating-system development directly with unusual hardware formats such as tri-folds. The limitation is international reach, since HarmonyOS remains far less established outside Huawei's core markets.

Mate XT2 provides an important test of whether sophisticated large-screen software can become a meaningful reason to choose a foldable rather than an impressive feature demonstrated mainly in stores.
