Google has also published the September 2026 Wear OS Security Bulletin covering vulnerabilities affecting Android-based smartwatches. Devices carrying a 2026-09-05 or later security patch incorporate both the relevant Android fixes and the additional Wear OS-specific corrections. The highest-rated Wear OS issue this month could allow local escalation of privilege, although Google notes that user interaction is required.
Smartwatch security is easy to underestimate because watches appear less capable than phones, but they increasingly store payment credentials, health information, messages and authentication data. LTE models can also operate independently for significant periods, making them more autonomous computing devices than simple accessories. Google's separate Wear OS bulletin reflects that growing importance.
As with Android phones, update timing depends heavily on the manufacturer supplying firmware for each individual watch. Consumers evaluating premium wearables therefore increasingly need to consider software-support policies alongside battery life, sensors and design.
