AirPods 5 pre-orders open as Apple lowers the entry point for ANC

Apple's AirPods 5 are now available for pre-order ahead of their September 18 release. The new generation begins at $129 and brings active noise cancellation to the standard open-ear range, while a $149 version adds a wireless charging case, longer battery capability and touch-based volume controls on the stems. Apple claims noise cancellation improves substantially over AirPods 4, despite retaining an open-ear design rather than silicone tips.

The pricing is notable because Apple is making ANC more accessible while simultaneously improving functionality, increasing pressure on mid-range wireless-earbud competitors. AirPods are also becoming increasingly important to Apple's AI strategy. Earbuds provide an always-available microphone and audio output for Siri without forcing users to interact visually with an iPhone. As assistants become more contextual, the value of AirPods may therefore shift from music accessory toward persistent interface.

The first independent reviews after September 18 will determine how effective Apple's open-ear ANC claims are in practice.
