iPhone 18 Pro pre-order weekend puts A20 Pro demand to the test

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are entering their first full pre-order weekend following Friday's opening of orders. The devices use Apple's new A20 Pro processor, upgraded thermal architecture and camera system while maintaining conventional slab-phone designs alongside the far more experimental iPhone Duo. That distinction matters commercially. The foldable has dominated headlines, but the Pro models will likely remain substantially more important to Apple's total shipment volume.

Pre-order activity will provide the first indication of whether the combination of improved photography, battery life, AI capability and 2nm silicon is enough to motivate upgrades from recent iPhone generations. Apple faces the same problem as the rest of the industry: premium smartphones are already extremely capable, so annual performance gains are less visible to ordinary users than they were a decade ago.

Custom silicon and AI are increasingly being used to justify upgrades that cannot rely solely on display or camera resolution.
