Apple details privacy architecture behind always-listening Watch AI

Apple has released additional detail explaining how the Audio Intelligence features announced for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are designed to protect privacy. Features including Siri Recap, Live Rewind, Sound Recognition and Music Recognition may involve continuous audio awareness, raising obvious concerns about whether a smartwatch is effectively recording everything around its owner. Apple says raw microphone audio is processed inside a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave built into the S11 chip.

The buffer is continually overwritten rather than stored as an audio file, and Apple says the operating system, applications and Apple itself cannot access the raw stream. When information must move between Apple devices, transfers use encrypted communication between secure hardware components. Users also decide what generated text to retain.

The architecture is strategically important because ambient AI will only become socially acceptable if consumers trust that microphones are not silently creating permanent recordings.
