Xiaomi 18 Fold intensifies pressure in China's premium foldable market

Xiaomi's 18 Fold remains one of the strongest challengers in the rapidly escalating Chinese foldable market. The passport-style device uses Xiaomi's own XRing O3 processor, a large internal display and a Leica-developed camera system, while its battery and charging specifications aim to remove some of the compromises historically associated with folding phones. Xiaomi also supports three-app multitasking when the device is unfolded.

The internally developed processor is strategically just as important as the form factor because it gives Xiaomi greater control over optimisation and reduces dependence on outside chip suppliers. Huawei's Mate XT2 is now on sale and Apple's iPhone Duo arrives in October, creating an extraordinarily crowded premium segment. Xiaomi therefore needs to compete not simply on specifications but on software polish, app scaling and long-term ecosystem integration.

Foldable phones are rapidly turning into a showcase for each manufacturer's entire engineering stack rather than just flexible-display technology.
