ARC X1's OwlOS Wants to Make Android Feel Like a Real Handheld OS

Powerful hardware is only half the battle for Android handhelds. The other half is making Android stop behaving quite so much like an operating system designed for tapping a telephone. ARC is tackling that problem with OwlOS, the controller-first software powering its new X1 gaming handheld. Built on AOSP, OwlOS is designed around gaming rather than conventional smartphone use.

ARC lists a unified game library, native Android gaming, cloud gaming, performance modes, an FPS overlay, quick resume, customizable gamepad mapping, controller remapping and per-game performance profiles among its features. There's also resolution scaling and OTA firmware updating. That's a substantial list because software polish has become one of the biggest differentiators in the increasingly crowded Android-handheld market.

A fast chipset isn't especially useful if launching games, configuring controls and changing performance profiles requires repeatedly poking at tiny touchscreen menus. The X1 pairs OwlOS with Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 hardware, 8GB LPDDR5X memory, a seven-inch 120Hz 1080p display and physical gaming controls. Whether ARC can make all those software features work as seamlessly as the specification sheet suggests will need proper hands-on testing.

But the philosophy is right: a dedicated gaming handheld should feel like a console when you switch it on, not like a landscape phone trapped between two controllers.
