Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Drops a Gaming Feature Its Predecessor Already Had

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 may be newer than the Gen 5, but today's closer examination of the specification sheet reveals an awkward wrinkle for mobile gamers: the standard Gen 6 drops High Performance Memory, or HPM, while Qualcomm reserves it for the more expensive Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Last year's standard 8 Elite Gen 5 included 18MB of tightly coupled GPU cache.

HPM is designed to reduce the bottleneck created when the Adreno GPU repeatedly reaches into shared system memory for demanding textures, antialiasing and graphics workloads. Qualcomm has previously said HPM can reduce latency and improve memory efficiency by up to 10 percent in demanding workloads, potentially helping both performance and battery consumption during longer gaming sessions.

The standard Gen 6 still claims a substantial 35-percent GPU-performance improvement over Gen 5, so calling the whole processor slower would be misleading. But the missing cache creates an intriguing question about sustained real-world gaming, particularly in titles or emulators able to exploit HPM. Matrix cores used for AI-assisted graphics are also exclusive to the Extreme model. Qualcomm has effectively created a much clearer gaming hierarchy between its two flagship chips.

Buying the chip with 'Elite' in its name is apparently no longer elite enough; you must now purchase the one whose name sounds as though it should arrive with a motocross helmet.
