Mario Kart Tour enters its final day today. Nintendo will permanently shut the iOS and Android racer's servers at 11pm Pacific on September 29, which translates to 8am CEST on September 30 in much of continental Europe. There is no planned offline edition, so once the servers disappear, so does the playable game. Mario Kart Tour launched in September 2019 and became one of Nintendo's most visible experiments with adapting its console franchises to free-to-play smartphones.
Its portrait orientation, simplified steering, gacha-style progression and real-world city courses made it unmistakably mobile rather than a miniature Mario Kart 8. Development of new courses, drivers, karts and gliders stopped in 2023, after which Nintendo continued cycling existing content. The commercial wind-down began earlier this year: premium currency sales and new Gold Pass subscriptions stopped before today's closure, while Gold Pass benefits were opened to players during the farewell period.
The lack of an offline preservation version is the painful bit. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp received a paid offline successor when its service ended; Mario Kart Tour will not. Seven years of mobile Mario Kart history therefore ends not with a blue shell, but with a server switch.
