The Philippines enters with particularly intimidating credentials: Philippine teams have won the last six MLBB world championships, and the national SIBOL roster includes Karl 'KarlTzy' Nepomuceno alongside Sanford Vinuya, Alston 'Sanji' Pabico, Dave 'Teddy' Viana, Jaypee Gonzales and Duane 'Kelra' Pillas. Malaysia and Indonesia are also among the regional heavyweights beginning their campaigns today.
MLBB was absent from the medal programme at the previous Asian Games, despite already being one of the region's largest competitive games, so its inclusion represents a significant milestone. It also demonstrates why mobile esports cannot sensibly be treated as a smaller cousin of PC competition in Asia. MLBB's audience, professional leagues and national rivalries are enormous.
Today those rivalries acquire flags, medals and considerably more opportunities for somebody's uncle to ask why staring at a telephone is now apparently an international sport.
