That makes practical sense for emulation: enormous numbers of 8-bit, 16-bit and handheld games were designed around squarer displays and do not particularly benefit from having acres of unused widescreen space on either side. Android retro handhelds have become one of gaming hardware's busiest niches, with manufacturers competing on processor power, display quality, controls and price while attempting to answer the eternal enthusiast question: how many devices capable of playing Super Mario World does one household actually require? Apparently at least one more. The category is increasingly sophisticated, though, and modern ARM processors mean these machines can stretch well beyond 16-bit nostalgia into considerably newer systems.
