Mario Kart Tour's Servers Go Dark After Seven Years

Mario Kart Tour officially reaches the end of service today, closing a seven-year chapter in Nintendo's mobile experiment. The servers were scheduled to shut at 11pm Pacific on September 29, corresponding to September 30 in Europe and much of Asia. Unlike Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which received a paid offline successor, Mario Kart Tour is not getting an offline preservation edition. Once service ends, the playable game effectively disappears.
Tour launched in 2019 with portrait-mode racing, touch controls, city-themed courses and a progression model designed specifically around smartphones. New courses, drivers and karts stopped arriving in 2023, after which Nintendo recycled existing tours until announcing the final shutdown. Whatever one's feelings about its monetisation, Tour contributed a surprising amount to the wider Mario Kart ecosystem: several of its city tracks later migrated into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Its closure is therefore more than the disappearance of a disposable spin-off. It is also another reminder of mobile gaming's preservation problem. A physical Mario Kart cartridge from decades ago can still be played. A seven-year-old connected mobile game can become a collection of screenshots before breakfast.
