Final Fantasy XIV Mobile shuts down in mainland China today at 11:00 UTC+8, and this closure carries considerably more weight than a normal regional end-of-service notice. LightSpeed Studios has also cancelled the planned global edition, meaning most of the world will never receive the mobile MMORPG at all. The adaptation launched in China on June 19, 2025 and had been intended to expand internationally afterwards.
In July, however, Tencent and Square Enix announced that changes in business operations and the market environment had led them to terminate the licensing agreement. New registrations and top-ups stopped on July 17; today the game servers and official website close, with forums and dedicated customer support scheduled to follow on October 15.
The cancellation is notable because Final Fantasy XIV is one of the world's most established subscription MMORPGs and mobile adaptation seemed an obvious route to another enormous audience. Instead, Mobile Eorzea lasted barely fifteen months in its only market. It is a sobering counterpoint to the industry's assumption that every successful PC or console property naturally wants to become a phone game. Sometimes the pocket-sized future simply does not make it out of the starting area.
