LINE Pokopoko begins a Frieren: Beyond Journey's End collaboration today on iOS and Android, running through October 30. The three-match puzzle game is adding Frieren, Fern, Stark, Methode, Himmel and other characters through events and gacha, while simply logging in awards a collaboration-exclusive version of Frieren wearing what the publisher rather wonderfully describes as a subtle or awkward expression.
LINE Yahoo is also running promotional missions and a web commercial using character voices and anime imagery. Anime collaborations are hardly rare in Japanese mobile gaming, but Frieren is an especially natural fit for a long-running puzzle title: both are perfectly comfortable taking their time, although only one normally involves matching coloured blocks.
The month-long event gives Pokopoko another recognisable cast to cycle through its established puzzle framework while providing Frieren fans with collectible characters and themed rewards. It is also another demonstration of how Japanese mobile games operate as enormous crossover machines, able to temporarily absorb an anime franchise without needing to reinvent their core mechanics. Frieren has spent a thousand years wandering the world. A month inside a match-three game should therefore be manageable.
