Key takeaways

  • Capcom releases the full Monster Hunter Rise on iOS and Android via Netflix Games.
  • Initial launch detected in select territories including the Philippines and Malaysia.
  • Features dedicated weapon touchscreen layouts, controller support, and new Recovery Button.

Capcom's Monster Hunter Rise has made a rather unexpected entrance onto smartphones, appearing through Netflix Games on iOS and Android in selected markets. The mobile edition surfaced on October 7, initially through storefront listings in territories including the Philippines, with reports also pointing to availability in Malaysia. Unlike Monster Hunter Now or the upcoming Monster Hunter Outlanders, this is an adaptation of the full action RPG originally released for Nintendo Switch in 2021.

Players can explore Kamura Village, hunt enormous monsters, collect materials, manufacture increasingly ridiculous weapons and join online hunting parties of up to four players. The adaptation includes touchscreen layouts designed for different weapon classes, controller support and a new Recovery Button that automatically selects a suitable healing or recovery item. Certain previously distributed Challenge and Event Quests can also be unlocked through progression.

An active Netflix subscription is required, and worldwide availability has not yet been announced. The arrival is particularly interesting because Netflix's gaming strategy has sometimes resembled a corporate expedition in search of a map. Bringing a major Capcom release to mobile is considerably more convincing than another collection of forgettable promotional minigames.

There are obvious questions about graphical compromises, performance and compatibility across different phones, but the prospect of carrying a proper Monster Hunter adventure around in your pocket is rather appealing. Just remember that hunting a Rathalos while waiting for the bus is considerably less productive than actually catching the bus.
