Hello Games has announced that No Man's Sky will launch on iPhone and iPad on October 28, bringing one of gaming's most ambitious space exploration experiences to devices that most people primarily use for messaging and photographing their lunch. Remarkably, this is not a simplified mobile spin-off. The developers say the iOS edition includes the complete procedurally generated universe and more than forty major updates released since the game's original 2016 debut.

That includes recent additions such as Cosmos and Voyagers, which expanded space station activities and starship construction. The technical achievement is particularly interesting because No Man's Sky generates its environments dynamically rather than relying entirely on conventional prebuilt maps. Hello Games says the mobile edition supports devices as old as the iPhone 11 and third-generation iPad Air.

Touchscreen controls have been redesigned for exploration, combat, flying, driving and inventory management, while external controllers are supported. Players can also cast the game to a television, and iPad users can use a mouse and keyboard. The installation requires less than 4GB of storage, an impressively compact footprint for such an enormous game. Multiplayer will not be available at launch, while planetary settlements require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. The game will be free to try, with a reported $19.

99 purchase unlocking the full experience. Pre-orders are already open. No Android release has been announced. Ten years after its famously troubled debut, No Man's Sky is preparing to demonstrate that the final frontier might fit comfortably inside your trouser pocket.
