Torchlight: Infinite is preparing to launch Season 14, titled Tartarus, on October 15, introducing an unusual new activity that combines dungeon combat with prison management. The seasonal mechanic takes place within the Netherrealm, where players begin by hunting escaped prisoners and collecting their identification nameplates. Those prisoners are subsequently placed inside a circular prison containing sixteen cells.
Players can arrange encounters between inmates or challenge them against dangerous creatures, gradually developing the prison's combat potential. After twenty turns of preparation, the system transforms the assembled prisoners into opponents and bosses that players must defeat across three prison levels and six difficulty settings. Rewards depend partly on the difficulty of the enemies created, encouraging players to make their own future battles increasingly unpleasant.
The season also introduces Spacetime Witness Youga, a new Hero Trait focused on maintaining continuous spell combinations. His Clockwork Core can automatically activate certain abilities, while critical hits reduce cooldown times. Three development paths allow players to specialise in projectile attacks, movement-based damage or spell enhancement. Another new system introduces recruitable followers from wolf, rat, lion and elephant tribes, each offering different combat benefits.
Tartarus demonstrates how action RPG developers continue experimenting with seasonal mechanics that change the structure of progression rather than merely adding more enemies. Whether players enjoy constructing elaborate prisons before fighting everyone inside remains to be seen. It certainly provides an interesting alternative to conventional dungeon management. Normally the objective is preventing prisoners from escaping.
Here, the objective appears to be making them sufficiently dangerous to ruin your afternoon.
