Key takeaways

  • Developed and tested within Miniclip's gaming ecosystem over three years.
  • Claims ads become skippable in half the time and require half as many taps to close.
  • Maintains partner data privacy with separation from Miniclip commercial operations.

Mobile gaming publisher Miniclip has launched AdSurge as a standalone advertising technology company, introducing a platform designed to improve advertising monetisation while reducing some of the frustrations associated with conventional mobile advertisements. The announcement was reported on October 14 and represents the commercial introduction of technology developed and tested within Miniclip's gaming portfolio over approximately three years.

AdSurge initially concentrates on games that generate substantial revenue through in-app advertising. Its technology combines advertising delivery, user acquisition and monetisation analytics, allowing developers to evaluate how advertisements influence both revenue and player behaviour. One of the company's more interesting claims concerns advertisement accessibility.

According to Miniclip chief data officer Paul Bugryniec, AdSurge advertisements become skippable in approximately half the time and require roughly half as many interactions to close compared with commonly used formats on competing networks. Those claims will require independent evaluation, but they address a genuine problem in mobile gaming. Advertisements that interrupt gameplay for excessive periods can generate short-term revenue while encouraging frustrated players to abandon the application.

AdSurge also emphasises privacy protections, with partner data separated from Miniclip's own commercial operations. The technology draws on expertise from Tencent's advertising ecosystem but was developed independently. Future plans include expanding beyond advertising-focused games to support titles combining advertisements with in-app purchases. For independent developers, another advertising platform could create additional competition and monetisation opportunities.

For players, the potential benefits are straightforward: fewer irritating advertisements and less time spent searching for microscopic close buttons. Whether the industry finally discovers that annoying customers is not an ideal business strategy remains an open question.
