Canadian mobile developer and publisher East Side Games Group has secured additional financing arrangements intended to strengthen its operations and support the development of two unannounced games scheduled for 2027. The company has obtained access to a CAD $4 million credit facility from National Bank of Canada, equivalent to approximately US$2.8 million at the exchange rate used in the announcement. It has also secured a separate US$4 million loan through Export Development Canada's Direct Lending Program.
The financing arrangements serve different purposes. Part of the available funding will be used to repay an existing credit facility with Royal Bank of Canada, while the Export Development Canada financing is specifically associated with the development of two future titles. East Side Games has not revealed the names, genres or intellectual properties involved in those projects. The company develops and publishes mobile games based on both original concepts and licensed entertainment properties.
It also licenses its GameKit development platforms and has pursued acquisitions as part of its broader growth strategy. Access to financing is particularly important in mobile gaming because development expenditure often occurs long before a game generates meaningful revenue. Publishers must also fund testing, user acquisition, technical infrastructure and ongoing content production. The new arrangements could provide East Side Games with additional flexibility while preparing its next releases.
However, credit facilities and loans should not be confused with direct equity investment or guaranteed future revenue. Borrowed capital must ultimately be repaid, regardless of whether a particular game becomes commercially successful. For the wider industry, the announcement illustrates how established mobile developers increasingly combine traditional banking relationships with specialised financing programmes.
Apparently making mobile games now requires almost as much expertise in financial engineering as it does in game design.
