Key takeaways

  • Reaches third place on Japan's App Store gaming revenue rankings and tenth on Google Play.
  • Propelled by Chapter 5 seventh-anniversary update and the five-star Perseria Love Stream weapon.
  • Highlights the revenue power of live-service milestone events alongside NetEase's Knives Out.

Dragon Quest Walk has returned to the upper reaches of Japan's mobile gaming revenue rankings following the introduction of additional seventh-anniversary content. According to storefront data published on October 16, Square Enix's location-based RPG reached third place in Japan's App Store gaming revenue rankings at approximately 9:30am local time. The movement followed the October 15 introduction of Chapter Five of the game's seventh-anniversary celebration.

The update includes limited-time equipment recruitment opportunities, giving established players another reason to expand their collections. A new five-star weapon associated with the goddess Perseria has also been introduced, featuring the Love Stream ability. Dragon Quest Walk climbed to tenth place in the corresponding Google Play revenue rankings.

Meanwhile, NetEase's battle-royale game Knives Out reached sixth place on the Japanese App Store following the beginning of its ninth-anniversary promotional activities. Those activities include limited-time equipment and vehicle-related rewards. Arknights remained at the top of both Japanese storefront rankings, while Arknights: Endfield climbed into the Google Play top twenty.

The figures illustrate the continuing commercial influence of anniversary celebrations and limited-time character or equipment recruitment campaigns. Established mobile games can generate substantial bursts of player spending when they introduce desirable content tied to important milestones. However, storefront positions represent relative rankings rather than audited revenue totals, and individual chart snapshots should not be interpreted as evidence of long-term market-share changes.

For developers, the lesson is familiar: maintaining an enthusiastic audience over several years can be enormously valuable. For players, the lesson is equally familiar. Apparently the most dangerous enemy in a mobile RPG is sometimes the temptation to spend money on another limited-time weapon.
