Independent developer Sungki Soft has released Seolhwa Dungeon on iOS and Android, bringing an unusually imaginative turn-based roguelike RPG to mobile players. Rather than simply borrowing monsters from mythology for decorative purposes, the game builds its mechanics around traditional Korean folktales. Players explore procedurally generated dungeons populated by supernatural creatures whose behaviour reflects the stories that inspired them.
One particularly unpleasant enemy is Jeoseung Saja, a grim-reaper figure who calls the player's name. If the creature successfully calls the name three times while maintaining sight of its target, the consequences are fatal. Another creature, the serpent-like Imugi, can transform into a dragon if a battle continues for too long. Players can also encounter supernatural funeral processions, dokkaebi and other figures from Korean mythology.
Character creation offers fourteen species and twelve classes, while eight gods provide additional gameplay considerations through divine rules and taboos. Spells are represented by cards selected during progression, and the game contains approximately 150 yokai accompanied by information about their original folktales. Individual runs reportedly last between forty minutes and two hours, making this a more substantial experience than the typical five-minute mobile dungeon crawler.
Permadeath ensures that careless decisions have consequences, while procedurally generated environments encourage experimentation. Seolhwa Dungeon is available through both major mobile storefronts, with an optional Folktale Collection purchase unlocking additional character options. Its greatest strength may be the way mythology influences actual gameplay rather than merely providing attractive artwork. Apparently the most dangerous thing in Korean folklore is not always a giant monster.
Sometimes it is simply somebody remembering your name.
