Key takeaways

  • Innovative optical puzzle game launching on iOS on October 23, designed around the iPhone Duo.
  • Closing and opening the folding handset moves players into clouds and shifts portal environments.
  • Supports multiple device postures including Book Mode for hints and Laptop Mode for controls.

Independent developer Michael Temper is preparing to release Porta Nubi on October 23, introducing another experimental puzzle game designed around the folding capabilities of Apple's iPhone Duo. The game will also support conventional iPhones and iPads, although its most distinctive interactions are intended for foldable hardware. Porta Nubi challenges players to direct beams of light toward matching targets using mirrors, prisms, portals and other environmental mechanisms.

Clouds complicate the process by blocking light and concealing additional pathways. Players can create openings through clouds and manipulate the portals hidden inside them, gradually developing increasingly complicated solutions. On the iPhone Duo, folding the device becomes part of the interaction system. Closing the handset allows players to enter a cloud, while opening it again returns them to the main puzzle environment. Different device positions introduce additional interface variations.

Laptop-style positioning provides a virtual controller on one section of the display, while Book Mode can present contextual instructions alongside the active puzzle. The approach demonstrates how developers are experimenting with hardware features beyond conventional touch input. Most smartphone games treat the display as a fixed rectangle, regardless of the device's physical construction. Porta Nubi instead attempts to make the relationship between the two halves of the screen meaningful.

Whether that innovation produces better puzzles will depend on the quality of the level design. Nevertheless, the concept offers an interesting glimpse of how foldable devices could influence mobile game development. Apparently folding your phone is no longer merely a convenient way to fit an expensive piece of electronics into your pocket.
