Key takeaways

  • UMAWALK launches free on iOS 15+ and Android 8+ on October 19, integrating with Apple Health and Android Health Connect.
  • Walking, jogging, climbing stairs, and nighttime rest improve virtual racehorse attributes including stamina, speed, power, and temperament.
  • Horses compete in automated weekly Sunday races against players with comparable walking activity levels.

Japanese developer Switch Media has launched UMAWALK on October 19, introducing a mobile game that transforms ordinary physical activity into the training programme for a virtual racehorse. Available on iOS and Android, the free application uses smartphone health information to determine how effectively players develop their horses. Walking increases stamina, faster movement and jogging improve speed, while climbing stairs or hills contributes toward power.

Players can select a training priority each morning and gradually develop their horse throughout the week. The game also rewards activities that have little to do with conventional exercise. Setting aside the smartphone for designated periods improves intelligence, while following the application's nighttime rest system can improve temperament and the horse's condition. Every Sunday at 9pm Japanese time, players can watch their horses compete in automated races against animals trained by other participants.

Importantly, competitors are grouped according to similar walking activity, reducing the advantage enjoyed by people who happen to walk enormous distances every day. The game initially offers thirteen horses, with each animal retiring after twenty-four races. Previous horses remain recorded, while achievements and titles provide additional progression objectives.

UMAWALK integrates with Apple Health and Android Health Connect, allowing walking activity to contribute toward progression even when the application is not open. The developer states that health-related information will not be used for advertising. The game is free with advertisements and supports iOS 15 or later and Android 8 or later. It is an interesting example of combining lifestyle applications with gaming mechanics.

Apparently the secret to developing a healthier walking habit is convincing people that a cartoon racehorse depends on their commitment.
