FingerLaserX is scheduled to launch on iOS and Android today, October 20, reviving a touchscreen arcade concept that first appeared in 2012. Taiwanese independent developer Wei Ting Weng has spent approximately five years rebuilding the experience from the ground up, transforming the original FingerLaser formula into a more substantial mobile shooter. The concept remains wonderfully straightforward.

Enemies descend from the top of the screen, and players swipe their fingers across incoming targets to fire powerful laser beams. Holding a finger in place charges a stronger attack, creating opportunities to eliminate particularly troublesome enemies. As battles progress, increasingly complicated enemy formations appear, eventually culminating in enormous boss encounters. FingerLaserX includes more than forty missions, three laser types and several equipment options.

Available gadgets include batteries, magnifiers, electromagnetic pulse devices, time bombs and black holes. Players can upgrade their equipment using resources earned through gameplay. The developer has also emphasised several features that distinguish the game from conventional free-to-play mobile releases. There are no compulsory advertisements, no stamina restrictions and no requirement to maintain an internet connection.

The game can be played offline and is designed to remain accessible without mandatory purchases. Optional in-app purchases are available, but the developer states that the complete experience can be enjoyed for free. Its simple controls also make it suitable for one-handed play. The original FingerLaser series reportedly attracted more than one million downloads, providing an established audience for the revival.

Apparently the most effective mobile gaming controller remains the one permanently attached to your hand.
