Japanese developer NINJIN, a subsidiary of WIZE, has opened the beta version of OshiUma Derby Blood 2, an unusual horse-racing card game that allows players to collect and train digital versions of real racehorses. Announced on October 30, the game can be played directly through smartphone and desktop browsers without installing a separate application.
The free-to-play title features a database of approximately 130,000 real horses, allowing players to search for familiar names and select favourites for their collections. New participants receive five cards, including an opportunity to choose a preferred horse from the extensive database. The selection also includes 224 legendary Grade One winners born between 1970 and 1995.
Horse abilities and characteristics are influenced by historical racing records, while progression systems allow players to develop their chosen competitors through training and experience. Races are presented using three-dimensional graphics, with several competitive formats available. Additional features include a collection catalogue, pedigree information and social tools that encourage interaction between enthusiasts. The beta launch is accompanied by a promotional campaign running until November 13.
Paid membership options and premium tickets are scheduled to become available on November 6. The browser-based approach is particularly interesting because it reduces the technical barriers associated with downloading another mobile game. However, the game remains in beta, so players should expect possible changes before a full commercial release.
Apparently horse-racing enthusiasts have finally found a way to collect their favourite competitors without needing several hectares of land, an expensive stable and an extremely understanding bank manager.
