The arrival of Apple's A20 Pro marks an important manufacturing milestone for smartphone processors. Built on 2nm technology, it represents the next step beyond the 3nm-class chips that have powered recent premium phones. Smaller manufacturing processes can increase transistor density and improve energy efficiency, although real-world benefits depend heavily on architecture and software.

Apple combines the new process with a redesigned seven-core GPU, faster CPU cores and a combined 32-core neural-processing configuration. The company says new neural accelerators provide twice the FP8 performance of the prior generation, which is particularly relevant for on-device generative AI models.

Mobile chip competition is increasingly about more than traditional benchmark speed: manufacturers need enough AI throughput, graphics capability and efficiency to power complex tasks without rapidly draining the battery. Qualcomm, MediaTek, Huawei and Xiaomi are all pursuing similar goals through different architectures, making the A20 Pro an important new reference point for premium smartphone silicon.
