iPhone 18 Pro brings variable aperture to Apple's 48MP main camera

Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max introduce a variable-aperture main camera built around a 48-megapixel sensor. The hardware uses physical aperture blades that can adjust how much light enters the lens, allowing the camera to respond more directly to changing lighting and depth-of-field requirements.

Variable aperture is familiar from dedicated photography equipment but remains relatively unusual in modern smartphones, where manufacturers often rely heavily on computational processing to simulate similar effects. Apple is also adding more manual Pro controls and improved low-light processing, giving advanced users more influence over the final image. The feature is important because smartphone camera competition has become increasingly difficult to differentiate through resolution alone.

A 200-megapixel sensor may sound impressive on a specification sheet, but optical flexibility and computational processing often matter more in practice. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, with availability beginning September 18.
