Apple's iPhone Duo may attract attention because it folds, but its long-term success will depend heavily on software. The device's 7.6-inch interior display allows two applications to run side by side, while Apple's display engine is designed to keep transitions fluid between the smaller external screen and larger internal canvas. Apple Pencil support further suggests that the company wants Duo to function partly as a miniature tablet rather than simply a large phone.

Foldable hardware has matured significantly across the industry, but poorly adapted applications can still waste much of the additional display area. Apple's advantage is control over iOS and its developer ecosystem, giving it the opportunity to establish clearer design standards for applications that move between screen sizes. The Duo also uses a vapour chamber and A20 Pro processor to sustain gaming and AI workloads across the larger display.

Whether developers embrace the format will determine how valuable the additional screen actually becomes.
